Part of him, a very large part, regrets deeply taking his sons from their mother; it is a part still deeply connected to his rage and disappointment at Nerdanel's abandonment, and so he puts it away, for the moment, to be considered later, at another time, when he is not enjoying the warm hospitality of this small family.
